Not So Beautiful Ruins

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter might be a New York Times Best Seller, and NPR’s Fresh Air might call it “A literary miracle,” but I do not recommend this novel to anyone.  I readily admit that I did not read the whole thing.  In fact I’m not sure that I got past the first chapter.

Here’s the scoop on why.  Language.  Plain and simple.  The foul language and the insults traded by two characters completely turned me off.  I wasn’t even far enough into the story that it killed me to close it forever.  It’s going back to the library, never ever to return!

It’s such a pity when someone has to ruin what might have been a great story by using such unimaginative language as swearing.  I hope the next book I pick up is better.  It’s by another author that I have never read.
